I’m just going to be honest.  This is my least favorite time of the year.

I mean, on a good day (like today, actually.  see previous post.) I can choose to see it as a clean slate, a fresh start.  But most days it just feels cold and bleak.  At this point, Spring is still months away, and it still gets dark at 5pm.  Basically, January is pert near torture.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear but a miniature statue and an envelope for best picture!

Enter:  awards season.

It’s almost embarassing how much I love awards shows.  I hurried in to work one day this week so that I could look up the Oscar nominations that were announced during my morning commute.  Not kidding.

Why (you’re probably thinking) do they so tickle my fancy?  So glad you asked.

I love the hilarious hosts and the witty acceptance speeches, the montages, and the sappy tributes.  I love watching the warm, sunny red carpet footage because, for just a minute, I can ignore the gray skies and bare branches outside my window.   I love seeing my favorite celebrities and seeing that even though they’re all dolled up (and liquored up, if you’re watching the GGlobes), they’re still just people who sometimes get tongue-tied when they’re nervous and teary-eyed when they talk about their mommas.  But mostly, I love the art of good film and TV and music, and I love that we celebrate it.

So if you need me tonight you can find me in my living room excitedly watching the SAG awards, ignoring the fact that it’s January,…

…and hoping to hear an acceptance speech from this guy.
